Bhojpuri pandits in Patna (भोजपुरी)

Bhojpuri in Patna

Bhojpuri is spoken across western Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, and it carries a large body of ritual song that no other language on this list carries in the same way — sohar at a birth, vivah geet through a wedding, the kajri and chaita that attach to particular months.

Those songs are the women's part of the rite and they are not the pandit's, but a Bhojpuri-speaking pandit works with them rather than through them: the katha is read in Bhojpuri, the pauses fall where the singing starts, and nobody has to be told in a second language what is happening.

A large part of Patna is one or two generations out of Bhojpur, Buxar, Rohtas and Saran, and Bhojpuri is the language those households kept. It is heard most at the rites the women lead — the sohar after a birth, the songs through a wedding — and a Bhojpuri-speaking pandit works to that rhythm rather than across it.

The practical effect is on timing. A rite where the singing is in Bhojpuri has its own pauses, and a priest who does not know where they fall will either talk over them or wait in the wrong places. Matching the language is largely a way of getting that right.
