What a vidhi fixes, and what it leaves to the family
The sequence below is the vidhi — the order the rite is conducted in, fixed by tradition rather than by the pandit. What varies between families is custom: which deity is honoured first, whether a particular prasad is made, how much of a katha is read aloud. The order itself does not move.
The katha is five chapters from the Skanda Purana and each closes with an aarti, which is why the family is expected to sit through the whole reading rather than arrive for a moment of it. The sinni prepared afterwards — wheat flour, sugar and banana — is shared beyond the household, and the tradition is specific about that rather than incidental.
