About Satyanarayan Katha
The Satyanarayan katha is the most commonly kept household puja in north India, and it is a reading rather than a rite of passage. The story is told in five chapters from the Skanda Purana, each one closing with an aarti, and the family sits through all five rather than arriving for a moment of it.
It is kept on a purnima by preference, and at a house-warming, a wedding, a new job or the end of a long journey. The prasad is sinni — wheat flour, sugar and banana — and the tradition asks that it be shared beyond the household. Three hours, at home or at a temple.
Keeping a rite in Nalanda
Nalanda district is small towns and villages around Bihar Sharif, and the custom kept is Magadh's — explained in Magahi more often than in Hindi, and following the practice of a particular tract rather than of the district. Households describe their rites as their village's, and they are right to.
There is space here that a city does not have, so havans and open-air rites are straightforward. Samagri for anything beyond the common list is bought in Bihar Sharif or brought from Patna, which is an hour and a half away.
