About Satyanarayan Katha
The Satyanarayan katha is the most commonly kept household puja in north India, and it is a reading rather than a rite of passage. The story is told in five chapters from the Skanda Purana, each one closing with an aarti, and the family sits through all five rather than arriving for a moment of it.
It is kept on a purnima by preference, and at a house-warming, a wedding, a new job or the end of a long journey. The prasad is sinni — wheat flour, sugar and banana — and the tradition asks that it be shared beyond the household. Three hours, at home or at a temple.
Keeping a rite in Darbhanga
Darbhanga keeps Mithila's own ritual tradition, which is a distinct school rather than a local accent: its own manuals, its own commentators, and its own order of days at a wedding. A family from outside the region will find the sequence unfamiliar, and a local pandit will assume the Maithila one unless told otherwise.
Marriages here are still arranged against the Panji genealogical registers, which adds a step before the muhurat is fixed rather than after. Most rites are kept at home; the temple visit that follows is usually to Shyama Mai.
