About Tarpan
Tarpan is water offered to the ancestors, poured through the part of the hand the tradition assigns to them, with black sesame and kusha grass. It is the simplest of the ancestral rites and the one kept most often — daily through Pitru Paksha, on an amavasya, and before a shraddh.
The offering is made facing south, standing in a river where there is one and from a vessel where there is not, with the sacred thread worn over the right shoulder. It takes about forty-five minutes with one pandit, and it is kept in a quiet register: no aarti, no prasad and nothing celebratory attached to it.
Keeping a rite in Patna
Patna keeps rites for a population drawn from every district of Bihar, so a household's custom here is usually its village's rather than the city's. Two families on the same street will differ on which day of a wedding carries which rite, and the pandit is expected to follow the family rather than the town.
Practically, the city is spread out and the traffic decides the day: a morning muhurat in Kankarbagh and an afternoon one in Danapur are two different bookings. Temple-mode rites are usually kept at Mahavir Mandir or at one of the two Patan Devi shrines, and both fill early.
