About Vastu Shanti
Vastu Shanti is addressed to the site and the structure rather than to the family, and it is kept on a newly built house before anyone lives in it. The Vastu Purusha — the figure the tradition holds to be lying within the plot — is worshipped, and a havan is made for the directions and the nine planets.
It is a separate rite from griha pravesh and comes before it, usually on the same day or the day before. A house that is bought or rented rather than built does not take one; a renovation that moves walls or a kitchen often does. Two to three hours, and it needs the house empty.
Keeping a rite in Rajgir
Rajgir is a pilgrimage town for three traditions at once and a small residential one underneath. Rites for visitors are kept at the kunds and at the hill shrines; rites for the town's own households are kept at home, in Magahi, on the Magadh calendar.
The hot springs are the town's ritual centre, and bathing there is a step in a rite rather than an amenity. The Malamas fair in the intercalary month is the one period when the site is too full to plan anything around.
