The temples of Darbhanga
Darbhanga's temples are Shakta and are the Raj family's as much as the town's. Shyama Mai stands on the family's cremation ground — built on the spot where a maharaja's pyre was lit, which is the tradition it keeps rather than an accident of siting — and Kankali Mandir near its pond belongs to the same group.
Both are inside the city with room around them, so they are among the few shrines on this list a family can reach by car and gather at. Kali Puja on the Diwali amavasya is the largest night of the year, and both Navratris fill the mornings.
Both of the city's main shrines sit in open compounds, which makes them among the few on this list a family can drive to and gather at — the reason so many Darbhanga rites end with a visit to one of them. Shyama Mai's mornings belong to couples visiting after a wedding and its evenings to the aarti crowd; Kali Puja is the one night neither is possible.
Madhubani, Saurath and the Mithila heartland are within an hour or two, and Saurath's sabha is where the Panji registers are consulted — a visit made for a marriage rather than for darshan. Janakpur, across the Nepal border, is the circuit's other end and is close enough to be done in a day. Saurath is under an hour by road, and the sabha is held in the summer months rather than year-round.
