The temples of Deoghar

Deoghar is a one-temple town in the sense that Baidyanath sets its calendar, its roads and its economy. The complex holds twenty-one shrines around the Jyotirlinga, and the tradition counts the site as a Shakti Peetha as well, a pairing claimed at very few places.

Naulakha Mandir, modelled on Belur Math and dedicated to Radha and Krishna, is the town's other landmark and is usually seen on the same trip. Shravan is the month everything is planned around: the kanwar queue runs day and night and the town belongs to it.

Outside Shravan a Baidyanath darshan takes minutes and the whole town can be seen in a morning, Naulakha included. Inside Shravan the queue is measured in hours and is routed through barricades from well outside the complex, so a visit in that month is planned as the day's only item. Mundan and other rites kept at the temple are arranged around the queue rather than around the muhurat alone.

Sultanganj, where the kanwar water is filled, is about a hundred kilometres away and is the start of the walk rather than a separate visit. Basukinath, forty-odd kilometres on, is kept by tradition as the pair to Baidyanath and is where the pilgrimage properly ends. Basukinath is an hour by road and is served by the same buses that carry the Shravan crowds.
