The temples of Gaya
Gaya's temples are organised around the ancestral rites rather than around the town. Vishnupad is the centre, Mangla Gauri stands on the hill above it as a Shakti Peetha and a station on the shraddha circuit at once, and the Akshayavat and the Falgu ghats are part of the same sequence rather than separate visits.
Bodh Gaya, eleven kilometres away, is a Buddhist site and a World Heritage monument, and it draws a different set of visitors on a different calendar. The one time to plan around is Pitru Paksha, when the town is full for a fortnight and every approach to Vishnupad is a queue.
A visit here is a sequence rather than a stop. Families keeping the ancestral rites move between the Falgu, the Vishnupad and the Akshayavat in one morning, on foot, and the pandit leads it; visitors coming only to see the town usually pair Vishnupad with Mangla Gauri's steps and Bodh Gaya in the afternoon. Nothing in that plan survives Pitru Paksha, when the whole town is one queue.
Rajgir and Nalanda are ninety minutes north and are usually seen on the same trip, which turns a Gaya visit into a Magadh one. Bodh Gaya is eleven kilometres away and belongs to a different tradition and a different calendar, but shares the town's hotels and its season. Both are reached by road in under two hours, and both are busier in winter than in the monsoon.
