The temples of Ranchi
Ranchi's temples sit on hills, which is the first thing anyone notices: Pahari Mandir above the city and the Jagannath temple at Dhurwa are both climbs, and the Deori shrine south of the city is a drive. The two traditions most visible are Shaiva and Shakta, with a Jagannath temple that keeps the Puri calendar.
The city's Durga Puja is kept in two forms at once, Bengali and local, and its Rath Yatra is the largest in Jharkhand. Pahari Mandir is also where the tricolour is raised on Independence Day and Republic Day, which makes those two dates as busy as any religious one.
All three of the city's main sites are climbs or drives, so a temple day here is a day out rather than an errand: Pahari Mandir's steps, the hill at Dhurwa, and Deori half an hour south. Weekday mornings are quiet at all of them. Independence Day and Republic Day fill Pahari Mandir for the flag rather than for a festival, which catches visitors out.
Deori, half an hour south, is the shrine most Ranchi households pair with the city's own, and Jagannathpur's temple is inside the city limits but feels outside them. Deoghar is a night's journey east and is the pilgrimage Jharkhand plans around rather than a day trip. Deori is reached by road on the Tata highway and is signposted from it; the drive is the whole of the journey.
