About Shyama Mai Temple
Shyama Mai at Darbhanga stands on the cremation ground of the Raj family and is a Kali temple built in 1933 by Maharaja Rameshwar Singh's line, on the spot where his own pyre was lit. That siting is deliberate and is the tradition the temple keeps.
It is one of the busiest shrines in Mithila and the place where a great many Darbhanga marriages are registered in practice, with couples visiting after the wedding. Kali Puja on the Diwali amavasya is its largest night.
The temple stands in the Raj compound with grounds around it, so it is one of the few shrines in Darbhanga a family can reach by car and gather at. Couples visiting after a wedding come in the morning; the evening belongs to the aarti crowd.
