The temples of Nalanda
Nalanda district's temples are old and rural rather than urban. The Surya temple at Baragaon is the notable one: sculpture recovered around its tank has been dated to the Pala period and some of it is set into the present building, and it is one of the few temples in Bihar where the sun is the presiding deity.
Its year turns on Chhath rather than on a festival of its own, when the tank fills with families offering arghya at sunset and sunrise across four days. The ruins of the mahavihara a few kilometres away are a monument rather than a place of worship and keep their own hours.
Baragaon is a village visit rather than a town one: about ten kilometres from the Nalanda ruins, no facilities at the temple, and whatever is needed is carried in. The ruins themselves keep monument hours and a ticket, and are usually seen the same day. Chhath is the exception to all of it, when the tank fills for four days and the village is the destination.
Rajgir is fifteen kilometres away and is effectively the same visit: the hot springs, the hill shrines and the ropeway. Pawapuri, the Jain site where Mahavira is held to have died, is about the same distance in the other direction, and Bihar Sharif's dargah draws a different crowd again. All three sit on the same road out of Bihar Sharif, which is why the loop is the usual way to see them.
