About Surya Mandir, Baragaon
The Surya temple at Baragaon, near the Nalanda ruins, is one of the few surviving temples in Bihar where the sun is the presiding deity. Sculpture recovered around the tank there has been dated to the Pala period, and some of it is set into the walls of the present structure.
The temple's year turns on Chhath rather than on a festival of its own. The tank beside it fills with families offering arghya at sunset and at sunrise across the four days, and the fair that accompanies it is among the largest in the district.
Baragaon is a village about ten kilometres from Nalanda and the temple sits beside its tank, with no facilities of its own. Families come for Chhath and bring what they need with them, which is what the four days of that fast assume anyway.
