2 temples documented in Darbhanga, 1 with full guides.
Darshan timings and how to reach, for every temple we have written a guide for — plus the pujas families keep near each one. Temples we have documented but not yet written up are listed below by name.
When Darbhanga's temples were built
Darbhanga's two principal temples are the Raj family's and are precisely dated. Shyama Mai was built in 1933 on the family's cremation ground, on the spot where Maharaja Rameshwar Singh's own pyre was lit — the siting is the tradition rather than an accident of land.
Kankali Mandir near its pond is older and belongs to the town rather than to the court. Between them they show what temple building in Mithila looked like: a regional court endowing shrines in the twentieth century alongside older neighbourhood ones, with the scholarship rather than the stone carrying the tradition.
