When Nalanda's temples were built
The Surya temple at Baragaon is the district's oldest fabric in use. Sculpture recovered around its tank has been dated to the Pala period — the eighth to twelfth centuries, when Nalanda's mahavihara was at its height — and some of it is set into the walls of the present structure, which is far more recent.
That is the district's whole story in one building: a Pala landscape whose great institutions were destroyed, whose material was reused, and whose surviving worship carried on at village scale. The mahavihara itself is a monument now and not a place of worship.
