About Ganesh Puja
Ganesha is invoked before every other deity, which is what a Ganesh puja is for: it opens a shop, a house, a vehicle, an exam season or a longer rite. Kept on its own it is a short sequence — sankalp, sixteen upacharas, the Atharvashirsha or the Sankatnashan stotra, aarti — and it is over in an hour.
Durva grass in odd-numbered blades and modak are the offerings the tradition asks for by name. At Ganesh Chaturthi the same puja opens with pranapratishtha and becomes a stay of a day and a half or longer, ending in immersion; the rest of the year it stands alone.
Keeping a rite in Patna
Patna keeps rites for a population drawn from every district of Bihar, so a household's custom here is usually its village's rather than the city's. Two families on the same street will differ on which day of a wedding carries which rite, and the pandit is expected to follow the family rather than the town.
Practically, the city is spread out and the traffic decides the day: a morning muhurat in Kankarbagh and an afternoon one in Danapur are two different bookings. Temple-mode rites are usually kept at Mahavir Mandir or at one of the two Patan Devi shrines, and both fill early.
