About Durga Saptashati Path
The Durga Saptashati is seven hundred verses on the goddess's defeat of Mahishasura, Madhu and Kaitabha, and Shumbha and Nishumbha, read in thirteen chapters. A full path takes three to four hours and is read in one sitting; families that cannot sit that long keep the navaha over nine days or have named chapters read instead.
It is kept through both Navratris, on Ashtami and Navami, and at a Shakta household's own occasions. The reading is preceded by a kalash sthapana and a sankalp, and the text has its own rules — the kavacha, argala and kilaka before it and the Devi Suktam after — which a pandit who works in this tradition will keep to.
Keeping a rite in Patna
Patna keeps rites for a population drawn from every district of Bihar, so a household's custom here is usually its village's rather than the city's. Two families on the same street will differ on which day of a wedding carries which rite, and the pandit is expected to follow the family rather than the town.
Practically, the city is spread out and the traffic decides the day: a morning muhurat in Kankarbagh and an afternoon one in Danapur are two different bookings. Temple-mode rites are usually kept at Mahavir Mandir or at one of the two Patan Devi shrines, and both fill early.
