About Haldi Kumkum
The haldi is kept in both households on the day or two before a wedding: turmeric paste with sandal and oil is applied by married women of the family, beginning with the mother, and the couple does not leave the house afterwards until the wedding.
It is the most social of the wedding rites and the least formal — the songs are the women's, not the pandit's, and the pandit's part is the short puja that opens it and the sankalp that names the couple. An hour and a half, at home, and the clothes worn for it are expected to be ruined.
Keeping a rite in Patna
Patna keeps rites for a population drawn from every district of Bihar, so a household's custom here is usually its village's rather than the city's. Two families on the same street will differ on which day of a wedding carries which rite, and the pandit is expected to follow the family rather than the town.
Practically, the city is spread out and the traffic decides the day: a morning muhurat in Kankarbagh and an afternoon one in Danapur are two different bookings. Temple-mode rites are usually kept at Mahavir Mandir or at one of the two Patan Devi shrines, and both fill early.
