About Namkaran
Namkaran is the naming, kept on the eleventh or twelfth day after a birth, or on the twenty-first where the family's custom says so. The nakshatra at the time of birth supplies a syllable, and the name chosen usually begins with it — which is why the birth time and place are asked for when the booking is made.
The rite is a Ganesh puja, a sankalp, the name said into the child's right ear by the father, and then aloud to the gathering. It is short, an hour or so, and is kept at home. Nothing about it needs a temple, and the tradition is specific that the name is announced rather than merely registered.
Keeping a rite in Patna
Patna keeps rites for a population drawn from every district of Bihar, so a household's custom here is usually its village's rather than the city's. Two families on the same street will differ on which day of a wedding carries which rite, and the pandit is expected to follow the family rather than the town.
Practically, the city is spread out and the traffic decides the day: a morning muhurat in Kankarbagh and an afternoon one in Danapur are two different bookings. Temple-mode rites are usually kept at Mahavir Mandir or at one of the two Patan Devi shrines, and both fill early.
