The Vaishnav tradition in Patna

Vaishnav observance holds Vishnu, and his forms as Rama and Krishna, as supreme. In Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh the dominant strand is Ramanandi, and its marks are visible ones: the urdhva pundra tilak drawn upward on the forehead, tulsi in every offering, and the Ramcharitmanas read where another household would read something else.

The clearest practical consequence is at the offering. A Vaishnav rite is bloodless without exception — no animal offering of any kind — and the prasad is prepared accordingly, which is worth settling with the pandit before the samagri list is bought rather than after.

The Ramanandi tradition is strong across Bihar, and Patna's Vaishnav households keep the visible parts of it: the upward tilak, tulsi in the offering, and a strictly bloodless kitchen for the day of the rite. That last point is worth settling before the samagri is bought.

The text read also changes. A Vaishnav household is likelier to want the Ramcharitmanas or the Bhagavata than the alternatives a Smarta pandit would offer by default, and the katha at a satyanarayan puja will be framed around Vishnu rather than around the household's chosen deity.
