About Annaprashan
Annaprashan is a child's first solid food, kept in the sixth month for a boy and the fifth or seventh for a girl in most north Indian custom, on a muhurat. The food is usually kheer, and it is given by the maternal uncle or the grandfather rather than by the mother.
The rite is short — a Ganesh puja, a sankalp, the feeding, and a blessing — and the part families remember is what follows it, when the child is set before a tray of objects and allowed to reach for one. An hour, at home, and the gathering is usually larger than the ceremony.
Keeping a rite in Patna
Patna keeps rites for a population drawn from every district of Bihar, so a household's custom here is usually its village's rather than the city's. Two families on the same street will differ on which day of a wedding carries which rite, and the pandit is expected to follow the family rather than the town.
Practically, the city is spread out and the traffic decides the day: a morning muhurat in Kankarbagh and an afternoon one in Danapur are two different bookings. Temple-mode rites are usually kept at Mahavir Mandir or at one of the two Patan Devi shrines, and both fill early.
